Western Digital My Book Essential 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

In association with Amazon.co.uk

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Disastrous!
Bought 6 of these - 4 failed within less than a year. There are far better drives available. Would like to give WD drives a zero rating but amazon doesn't allow it. I'll never buy a Western Digital drive again.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - RUBBISH1
This item is TOTAL RUBBISH, when I removed it from the packaging and changed the plug over from US to UK, it simply wouldn't work, no lights, no set up software....NOTHING... back it goes, what a waste of time! A lot of reviews about this product are very poor, SAVE YOUR MONEY, Do YOUR RESEARCH and buy something else!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Seriously don't buy this drive!
Before buying this drive, I read all the reviews, even the negative ones and thought it won't happen to me as long as I buy from Currys. I was initialld disapointed to ifnd a crack in the case, just below the light, but ignored it. I had the drive 4 weeks, saved loads of work on it and was generally happy. I had noticed it spark a few times when I plugged it into the USB but didn't think anything of it. Recently, I plugged it in, it sparked and went bang. The hard drive is no more. Rang western digital and they offered to replace the drive with a refurbished drive. Its only 4 weeks old and only used half a dozen times!!!!!!!!!!. I might as well have bought a second hand one and saved some money.

You might be like me and be sat there reading this thinking it won't happen to me. I can assure you, it will !!. This drive will let you down.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Pretty Vacant
Okay, so lets start with the positives - it's small (hardback book sized), it's extremely pretty, fast data transfer, mac & PC compatible, its storage capacity is sizeable for the price and it is very quiet...

In fact that is just the problem, on the 3rd day of use mine is just a little too quiet. You see, after 3 boots my mybook unfortunately no longer wishes to power up which is a tad annoying given i've just transferred a whole load of data to it.

I do appreciate that "these things happen" and can happen to any manufacturer however i was surprised that it failed so quickly. Using it as a backup drive for all my precious photos, I would honestly think twice before ordering another one, or do as the previous reviewer suggested and backing up in 2 locations - my problem being I don't want to worry that my backup is not safe.

Very sad to write a bad review but I wasn't impressed with the short life of this unit.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - lasted 12 hours....
I got my 1tb My Book on Monday, it lasted a whole day and then started smelling of burnt electronics. Contacted Amazon, they were excellent and sent me a replacement Thursday, started it up, backed up some files. Got home backed up some more files from home pc then suddenly it died. It lasted 8 hours.

Thankfully Amazon seem really good about replacing dodgy products but why stock them in the first place.
