Editorial Review:

Amazon.co.uk Review:
In the grand scheme of theological thrillers, Constantine aspires for the greatness of The Exorcist but ranks more closely with The Order. Based on the popular Hellblazer comic book series, and directed with nary a shred of intelligence by music video veteran Francis Lawrence, it's basically The Matrix with swarming demons instead of swarming machines. Keanu Reeves slightly modifies his Matrix persona as John Constantine, who roams the dark-spots of Los Angeles looking for good-evil, angel-devil half-breeds to ensure that "the balance" between God and Satan is properly maintained. An ancient artifact and the detective twin of a woman who committed evil-induced suicide (Rachel Weisz) factor into the plot, which is taken so seriously that you'll want to stand up and cheer when Tilda Swinton swoops down as the cross-dressing angel Gabriel and turns this silliness into the camp-fest it really is. The digital effects are way cool (dig those hellspawn with the tops of their heads lopped off!), so if you don't mind a juvenile lesson in pseudo-Catholic salvation, Constantine is just the movie for you! --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Worth watching for tilda swinton
I thought tilda swinton's character was amazing. I loved ever second of the part she played, I only wish there was more of her in this film, I thought she was scarier than the devil, completely unhinged. I felt a bit let down by the film because it relied on a few cheap scares and no real crux to the story. Their could have been a lot more to it, a twist, and real peril but it lacks. But in saying that, I would watch it several times just to see tilda's performance.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - THERE IS ALWAYS A CATCH
When a Mexican finds the Spear of Destiny (aka the Spear of Longinus) amidst ruins, it sets off a chain of events that could lead to a Hell-fueled Armageddon on Earth. Enter John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), freelance demon-hunter, and Los Angeles detective Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz), who are to play roles in the ongoing "battle" between heaven and hell.

Judging Constantine on visuals, style and attitude, it would easily earn a 10. But as we learn in the film, "there's always a catch". ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Constantine
It's a rare kind of movie, mixing supernatural with adventure.
It deals with issues of good and evil from a worldly view.

Just like other movies involving angels and demons, this one
contemplates the apocalypse, and John Constantine will be the
guy determined to stop it.

John Constantine is brilliantly played by Keanu Reeves, providing
the gravitas the movie needs, along with the seen-it-all attitude
skeptics will relate to.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Did I like it? not sure
This film could have been amazing. The actual idea behind it, of a man able to send demons back to hell, also fleeing the devil himself, is clever to say the least. However, there is something lacking and I can't quite put my finger on what it is.

Could be Keanu's grunting. I kept expecting him to say "excellent" like in Bill and Ted. Also, Rachel Weiz's american accent was rubbish and her acting wasn't great either.

I originally went to see this film at the cinema and wasn't too ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Cool but lacking
There are some cool ideas and action sequences here, but the script doesn't do them justice. You never really feel Constantine is in that much danger, that there's anything he can't handle. Without that, it's just a guy going through the motions. Don't get me wrong, it's a decent movie, just not the movie it could've been. Pity.
