The evergreen prison situation comedy Porridge produced some of Clement and LeFrenais' funniest scripts and, arguably, Ronnie Barker's funniest performances as the cynical old lag Fletcher. It was also a superb vehicle for the much-missed Richard Beckinsale as Fletcher's young cell-mate Godber. This survey has an episode from each of the three series: "A Night In" is a simple two-hander, in which Fletcher and Godber get to know each other; "The Harder They Fall" involves the prison's elderly Godfather, Grout (Peter Vaughan) in an elaborate gambling scam; and "A Storm in a Teacup" complicates Fletcher's life with some pills stolen from the infirmary...These are classic sit-coms from a golden age; the sharp writing of the scripts, and the excellent performances by a fine cast, have worn surprisingly well. --Roz Kaveney
