Editorial Review:Amazon.co.uk Review:Garry Marshall (
Pretty Woman) directs the screen adaptation of Terence McNally's play
Frankie and Johnny at the Clair de Lune, the story of a short-order cook (Al Pacino) who drives a waitress (Michelle Pfeiffer) crazy with his adamant courtship and mixed messages. The film is okay and not much more than that, the major stumbling block being Marshall's failure to scrub away enough star veneer on Pacino and Pfeiffer to accept them as minimum-wage drones with nowhere to go but toward each other. Fortunately, Marshall's feel for the texture offered by supporting players--Hector Elizondo as a café owner, Nathan Lane as Pfeiffer's inevitably gay neighbour-buddy, Kate Nelligan as another lonely waitress--keeps things interesting enough. --

This is Pacino and Pfeiffer - not since Scarface have they starred together and with the spectacular but bloody end of the former film - it is fantastic to see them together cleaning teeth at the end of this film....
Amazon review seems to imply the star quality is not used - rubbish - these two were made to play off each other - watch Scarface and then watch this - its like a reunion but in better days. Al Pacino carries both roles off within 10 years of each other - the comparison ...

This is a thoughtful, adult film that explores complex feelings and interactions among a group of people, who in different ways have difficult lives and little money. The two leads largely manage to be believable as ordinary people: Pfeiffer a bit more convincing than ...

After their "romance" in 'Scarface' they (Pacino and Pfeiffer) decide to have a real romance, and it is a pretty good one. Not that the film is great but in this kind of films all I hope for is a little chemistry, some nice characters and a few laughs. This film has it all.
The chemistry between Al Pacino (Johnny) and Michelle Pfeiffer (Frankie) works because in the movie they have to fight for that chemistry. Al Pacino is a great actor but I think Michelle Pfeiffer was better here. Although ...

I will always remember this movie for the sheer amount of dialogue between Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino. They have long conversations that are quick-witted,aggressive,poignant,upsetting,loving,absurd,and just about any kind of verbal exchange people can have. And this is what makes Frankie And Johnnie such good entertainment - we've all had conversations like these and can relate to them.
