This is the first Emma Blair book that I have read, but it certainly won't be the last. This is the story of two friends in Jersey at the time of world war II, and how their lives are turned upside down by the war. It has everything, love, romance, passion, fear, distress, and hope. It is the story of how the human spirit can overcome even the most difficult obstacle, and can find love and comfort during the most troubled times. I felt so strongly for everyone in this book, and did hope that there ... Read More

Holly Morgan thinks she will never find love again after her fiance dies at Dunkirk but she is surprised to find herself falling for a doctor at her hospital. Unfortunately he's German and one of the enemy! Still, they make their relationship work, despite having to keep it secret for fear of Holly being branded a "Jerrybag" and numerous other ups and downs. It has a very sad ending but I would strongly recommend it to other readers.

This book gives you an insite into the hardships in Wartime Jersey. The treatment of the islanders, their meagre food rations, and the superior treatment given to the enemy. There is a lovely storyline, where a nurse falls for a German doctor, after loosing her fiance at Dunkirk. This relationship must be kept secret, and because of this it has its ups and downs. I liked the way it began, Elspeth telling her daughter about her best friend Holly, and how she was named after her. This is the ... Read More

When Holly loses her fiancee at Dunkirk she thinks that she will never find love again. She throws herself into her work at the local hospital, nursing the hated Germans. Here she meets Dr Peter Schmidt and she knows that her life will never be the same again. Peter moves to another hospital on the island where there is soon an outbreak of typhiod. Many die and then disaster strikes! I enjoyed this book, Emma Blair is an expert at writing books that make a tear come to the eye.
